Strainer is a device used for purification and filtration of working fluid flowing in to the pipeline which contains contaminated particles like rust, scale, weld metals etc. When the working fluid in the pipeline is passed through the Strainer, the unwanted debris, solid particles are trapped in to the screen of Strainer, thus protecting the further critical equipment from getting damaged. Selection of correct Strainer at correct location is very critical to protect expensive and important equipment such as Pumps, Flowmeters etc.

According to the Body constructions, Strainer can be Classified in to two types:

y-strainer

‘Y’ STRAINER

In ‘Y’ Strainer, the filter portion connects to main pipe at an angle of 45⁰, which gives it a ‘Y’ shape as its name. This type of Strainer is most commonly used in Oil and Gas, Steam, Vacuum services etc. ‘FLOWON’ ‘Y’ Strainer are equipped with large filter portion diameter area so as to achieve perfect filtration and eliminate choking of solid debris. As far as the orientation is concerned, Y Strainer can be installed in both horizontal and Vertical position (which is always not a case). In Horizontal position, the filter leg must be point vertically downward so that the debris collected in the pocket is trapped in the bottom most part of screen. In case of Vertical position, the filter leg must be point downward, which naturally direct the debris in to pocket. As compared to basket type Strainer, ‘Y’ Strainer has low dirt holding capacity which requires frequent cleaning of Strainer. Sometimes, drain plug is also provided at the top of cover to clean the choke line.

‘T’ STRAINER OR BASKET STRAINER

‘FLOWONBASKET Strainer comes with large vertical chamber as compared to ‘Y’ Strainer. Due to its large filtration area, the pressure drop in Basket Strainer is very less as compared to ‘Y’ Strainer which makes it suitable for liquid applications. Due to its high dirt holding capacity as compared to ‘Y’ Strainer, it is most often used in larger pipelines. The Gasket used in Basket Strainer is S.S-304 spiral wound with graphite filler. For Steam application, drain plug with steam trap is provided at the bottom of the Strainer to remove condensate steam. Servicing of Basket Strainer can be done by removing top cover bolts, after which the filter is cleaned for reuse or replaced if found accumulated. The installation of Basket Strainer is only done on horizontal pipelines, and for heavy strainers, fabricated base is provided for support.
